A faculty member in the Department of Sculpture at Kala Bhavana, Visva Bharati
Kamaldeep Dhar, a faculty member in the Department of Sculpture at Kala Bhavana, Visva Bharati, completed his formal art education at the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, under the mentorship of the renowned sculptor Shri Niranjan Pradhan. His rigorous training under Pradhan laid the foundation for Dhar’s deep understanding of form, material and the philosophy of sculptural expression. With a deep-rooted passion for preserving the legacy of great artists, Dhar shoulders the significant responsibility of safeguarding the artworks of renowned sculptor Ramkinkar Baij housed in the Visva Bharati collection. His extensive engagement with Baij’s sculptures has not only shaped his expertise in restoration but has also deepened his personal and artistic connection with the legendary sculptor’s vision. Under his leadership, and in collaboration with senior faculty members, four of Baij’s iconic works—Mill's Call, Harvester, Sujata, and Santhal Family—were meticulously renovated under his supervision. Dhar’s dedication to their conservation goes beyond technical precision; he has spent countless hours studying Baij’s methods, materials and artistic philosophy. Immersing himself in the sculptor’s bold, modernist approach and unconventional use of materials, Dhar has developed a profound appreciation for Baij’s artistic language. His deep involvement with Baij’s works has left a lasting impact on his own artistic perspective. Through restoration, Dhar not only safeguards these masterpieces but also keeps alive Baij’s vision, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
